Text Box: What is baby signing?
Baby signing is simply using your hands to sign key words while you talk to your baby or toddler. Your child’s speech depends on how developed his or her vocal apparatus is, amongst other factors. By using signs with speech, your child can start to communicate before he or she can speak. Just as crawling is to walking, signing helps your child develop language skills before he or she talks. By signing with your child as you speak you are creating a visually rich language which enhances your baby’s comprehension and memory of what you are telling them.
Babies as young as 6 months have been begun to sign words such as “milk” and “eat”. Toddlers who are saying a few words benefit from being able to clarify their spoken words, and sign words that they are not able to say yet, such as “crocodile” or “bicycle”, and still continue expanding their vocabulary. Preschoolers can discover the fun way of developing literacy skills by signing the letters of the alphabet, and learning written words by associating them with signs. Research is showing that the benefits of signing are not only immediate, by giving babies a way of “talking” early, but it also has lasting benefits. The benefits are numerous, and now is a great time to see them for yourself!
